Indian service members who died in the line of duty. More are added as each record is researched and checked.
What the map shows
Each mark is a birthplace. Where several people come from the same area, the mark shows how many; zoom in and the marks separate. Select a mark to see who came from there.
How locations are set
Marks sit on the recorded village or town. When a village cannot be placed with confidence, the mark sits at the district headquarters; the profile always shows the documented birthplace and says where the mark actually sits.
Where the information comes from
Every record is written by hand from published sources, including the Ministry of Defence gallantry awards portal, memorial records and reference works. Each profile lists its sources. Where sources disagree, the profile says so instead of choosing one.
Map data
The map is real satellite photography from Esri World Imagery (Maxar, Earthstar Geographics), toned down so the names stay readable. India's border and the state boundaries follow the official Survey of India map, including the complete Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, using data published by the DataMeet community (CC BY 4.0). The state lines can be switched off with the layers button; the national border always stays.
